May's Donation- Black Men Heal
At HAV Haircare, we are proud to be a huge advocate for mental health and well-being. Every month our CEO, Kami Wills, donates to organizations that raise mental health awareness in the black community. For May, our donations went towards Black Men Heal, an organization that aims to remove the stigma that surrounds the black community and mental health.
Mental health is a topic that needs to be discussed, especially among people of colour. At HAV Haircare, we’re not just passionate about hair our goal is to help our community physically and mentally as much as we can. For our founder, after being in an unhappy place for a long time, it wasn’t until she found her passion for hair care that things started to look brighter. Throwing herself into what made her feel good, hair became her solace and as her hair flourished so did her mind. After transitioning to her natural hair, more and more women began to approach her for hair care tips and the products she was using - and HAV Haircare was born.
Finding her passion is what got her through darker times but mental health is not one easy road and sometime people need support, and that’s okay. To give back, bringing awareness to Black Men Heal is this month's project.
Did you know that African Americans are 20% more likely to struggle with their mental health than their white counterparts? Black men, in particular, often struggle to fit the mold and expectations relating to their race and gender. Due to a lack of black therapists finding the right support is a real problem and the cycle continues. Black Men Heal offers free sessions by pairing men of color with a black therapist so they can work towards personal growth.
We often hear men say “I am a man; I got this” but rarely hear them say “I need help”. For more information visit their website and support your local community by sharing their vision with others.
