July's Donation- Sad Girls Club
Every month, HAV Healthy Hair and Virtue donates to a mental health charity or organization to show their ongoing support to mental health awareness. July’s donation is going to Sad Girls Club, a non-profit organization that helps girls who are suffering from mental illness both online and in the community. They offer a safe and supportive space for open uplifting conversations about mental health.
Sad Girls Club was founded by Elyse Fox in 2017. The organization was launched after Elyse released a documentary about her life with depression which immediately resonated with women all over the world. Young females came forward and expressed their needs for a mentor who could help with their mental health struggles and the Sad Girls Club was born.
The organization aims to bring girls together through a supportive online platform and real life community work. They strive to achieve three main goals:
- Remove the negative stigma integrated within mental health conversations
- Provide mental health services to girls who do not have access to therapy and treatment
- Create in real life safe spaces that build a community for young women to know so they are not alone
Sad Girls Club provides accessible mental health resources for millennials and Gen Z. Talking therapy is one of the main outlets that Sad Girls Club can provide for those struggling with their mental health. By providing this, the organizations aims to reduce the global suicide rate while combating stigma and stereotypes specifically among women of color and women of immigrant communities. They also run a successful blog that discusses various topics relating to mental health including sex, relationships, wellness and parenthood. Here, women can read about other people’s stories of survival and personal growth. Sad Girls Club also has regular events and online streams so women can feel like part of a community.
